Jesse Lingard probably made one of the most horrendous mistakes of his professional career last week for Manchester United. He was just coming back from a tough time after some personal issues and a short loan spell for West Ham United. Last season, Lingard offered proof of his recovery and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to give him another chance. We are talking about one of the most important academy products of the last decade, alongside names such as Marcus Rashford or Mason Greenwood.
But the one player who always seemed like that skillful product was Lingard before his personal issues. Last week’s mistake was a perfect way to test his character and his performance against the Hammers proved he is truly back. He showed the mental fortitude that only the best players can display in moments of tension. When the game was at its most difficult, Lingard came out to deliver the winning goal with a total screamer he decided to not celebrate. Instead, he went to the United stand to apologize for his most recent mistake.
What’s next for Jesse Lingard?
According to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the club is currently in talks with Lingard’s agents for a contract extension. Despite his term ending with Manchester United next summer, Jesse’s current form is more than enough for the club to make him a new offer. Fabrizio Romano reports that Jesse’s father is talking to the club about the possible new deal and there are no other options being considered at the moment.
United also has another three players who need to renew their contracts at the club such as Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw, and Paul Pogba. But the most urgent deal that needs to happen is Lingard and the French midfielder. United needs these two players if they want to compete for titles over the next five years. Last weekend’s bounce back to form is the perfect way for Lingard to remind everybody he is far from finished.
