Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has listed four players ‘we could do without’ to help fund a Harry Kane transfer.
Gary Neville has recommended Manchester United sell Anthony Martial, Daniel James, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard.
Neville believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side need to break the 90-point barrier this season to challenge for the Premier League, something he suggests they cannot do unless Harry Kane arrives.
As things stand, Martial and Edinson Cavani are Solskjaer’s two recognized center forward options. Both players, however, face uncertain futures for different reasons. Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood can also cover this position, although they normally play on the flanks.
Speaking to Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show, Neville said: “Man Utd will lose Martial and Cavani in the next 12 months – they’ll only have Mason Greenwood as a center forward. Rashford’s [on the] left. So they do need a center forward in the next 12 months.”
On Kane, who wants to leave Tottenham this summer, Neville said: “The guy is available now if you pay £150million – they’ve got Martial, James, Mata, Lingard – we could do without them at the club, I think.
“I personally think Kane coming in would be a differentiator.”
Several betting sites are making Manchester United the front-runners for Kane’s signature.
Sancho and Varane are not enough to win the title
Despite signing Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane this summer, Neville doesn’t believe it will be enough for United to win the Premier League. He reckons their rivals are simply too strong.
The former Red Devils full-back said: “My gut feeling is no, they won’t have the same impact as [Virgil] van Dijk and Alisson to get them up to that 95 point mark that we’ll need to win the league.
“Chelsea, we’ve seen what they’re doing with [Romelu] Lukaku, Van Dijk has come in for Liverpool, City have got [Jack] Grealish and they’re in for Kane. If City get Kane, I think there’s a massive problem for Manchester United.
“I think if Kane went to United, they could get up to 90-95 points. They still need to replace Cavani and Martial next summer. Martial isn’t going to do it, Cavani only has one year left. They’re going to have to buy a center-forward at some point. Why not get the man now and give Ole the impetus he needs to get to that points total.
“I don’t think he can with just Sancho and Varane.”
