New Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo and managing director Fabio Paratici have welcomed their first signing in north London.

Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini has joined Tottenham on a season-long loan deal, with a buy option included.

The 26-year-old’s arrival marks the club’s first signing since Nuno Espirito Santo and Fabio Paratici became the manager and sporting director respectively. He is expected to provide backup for no.1 keeper Hugo Lloris.

“We are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini from Italian side Atalanta on a season-long loan, with an option to make the transfer permanent,” read a club statement.

Gollini took his medical in Italy due to COVID-19 travel restrictions and traveled to London on Thursday to complete his move.

“I am very happy,” he told Sky Sport Italia on Thursday.

It is very difficult to leave my second home. I thank Bergamo [Atalanta’s home base] and the fans. I felt very loved and what we did will remain in history.

“I am grateful to Tottenham for this opportunity. I can’t wait to start. The possibility of staying in Italy was there but Tottenham was the best opportunity.”

Spurs will reportedly pay Atalanta £13 million if they sign Gollini permanently next summer. This clause could become an obligation if the goalkeeper plays a certain number of games.

Gollini previously represented Manchester United at youth level and played 20 games for Aston Villa in the Championship during 2016/17.

He will compete with Lloris and Joe Hart for a place in the Spurs goal for next season.
