Havertz braced for 'real test' after making European Championship history

After making history in Germany’s victory over Portugal in Euro 2020, Kai Havertz opened up on the team’s improved prospects and the next challenge.

Kai Havertz has warned Germany qualification into the last-16 is ‘not done yet’ after Saturday’s 4-2 win over Portugal.

The Chelsea forward made European Championship history in Munich by becoming Germany’s youngest-ever scorer in the tournament upon finding the back of the net in the second half.

In fact, Havertz was arguably one of the best players on the pitch and proved a real handful for Portugal.

Not only did the 22-year-old score, but he had a role behind Ruben Dias’ own goal that cancelled out Cristiano Ronaldo’s opener to draw the scoreline back level at 1-1 before the break.

But while delighted to have helped Germany seal a solid victory, Havertz already has one eye set on Wednesday’s Group F finale against Hungary.

“It was an important win. I think everyone could see the kind of football we can play,” said Havertz as per the DFB.

“We created a lot of chances and then ended up going 1-0 down through a silly counterattack.

“We can be happy with the game though. I trust my strengths and am happy to have helped out with a goal. We have a good chance of reaching the last 16, but it’s not done yet.

“We have one more tough game ahead of us – Hungary will be a real test.”

Robin Gosens, who assisted Havertz for his second half goal, was also on target for Germany.

Joachim Low’s men have moved into second place in Group F and just one point behind leaders France.
