We need to talk about the day in which English supporters saved football’s competitive spirit from the giant clubs’ greed.

Leave it to English supporters to save the sport they invented themselves from the greed of the super-rich. April 20th of 2021 will be a day that will never be forgotten in European football history thanks to these heroes. Gary Neville is the one who started the charge on Sunday evening after the European Super League was announced. The former Manchester United star is a modest club owner himself at Salford City F.C. It was obvious he had a lot to lose if this new tournament was created.

All the more reason to rally the troops of English football supporters to take on the streets of Great Britain and demand justice. Monday was slightly strange because the news were present but there was no clarity on what these 12 clubs attempted to accomplish. But after Florentino Perez appeared on Spanish television, it all became clear. Modest clubs were about to die and football as we know it was about to change for good. The fans weren’t willing to allow this to happen. Tuesday was bound to become a historic day in England and the rest of the world.

Only England supporters stepped up.

Neither Spanish nor Italian supporters were as vocifeours as the English contingent. Apart from a few signs outside of the stadiums, they didn’t really seem to care about the modest clubs from their countries. But England is way different due to the sense of community all club supporters share. The constant banter from a competitive match regardless of the team’s power is the spice that adds to the beautiful game.

From the early hours of the day, the cities of Liverpool, London, and Manchester were packed with angry supporters. They all demanded this idea of a Super League to get bottled before it was born. As the pressure kept mounting, the magic started to happen in English football. They are the unsung heroes of this historic day in the sport and nobody should ever forget them. April 20 of 2021 was the day England saved football from greedy club owners.
