The Belgian marksman has been placed alongside the world’s striking elite by one of the finest forwards of the late 1970s and 1980s.

Romelu Lukaku “is on the same level as” Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappe, that is the view of former Inter Milan man Alessandro Altobelli.

With 21 goals in 29 games, Lukaku sits second to only Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in the Serie A goalscoring charts.

The striker has been the linchpin of Inter Milan team as they push for their first Serie A title in over a decade this season.

“At the beginning of the season, I thought he was an average player, but I was wrong,” Altobelli told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Italy is the university of football. If you want to make a further step, you must play in Serie A.

“Lukaku is not only capable of scoring in any way and against any opponent, but he is also a great leader who helps the team. For me, he is on the same level as Lewandowski, Haaland, and Mbappe.”

Asked if Lukaku is as good as he was in his heyday, the 1982 World Cup winner replied: “Nice question, but we’re talking about different eras. I was among the best strikers of my generation, and now the same is true of Romelu.
