During a recent live chat, Romelu Lukaku opened up about how difficult scoring goals in the Italian Serie A can be for a striker.

The Italian Serie A is the most defensive football tournament in European football, Romelu Lukaku knows this first-hand. Historically, even the best strikers in the world have struggled to score goals against Italian clubs. Just as an example, Cristiano Ronaldo is nowhere near the number of goals he used to score in the Spanish La Liga. In Lukaku’s case, he’s been more prolific than ever in his life.

His time at Inter Milan has given him the perfect environment to thrive as a potent striker due to his physical attributes. Very few defenders in Italian football can handle him and his results speak for themselves. Today, he is leading Inter Milan to a new Serie A title with an 11-point advantage. Lukaku described his struggles to score goals in Italian football in a recent interview.

Lukaku opens up about Serie A.

In a live chat interview with 433, this is what Lukaku said: “I feel good, we are working really hard. There were lots of ups and downs last season, but there are a lot of young players in the squad, so I think taken another step forward. There are many games to go and we’re hungry to achieve our results. Honestly, no. I think Serie A is a really complicated league, you have to prepare for every single game and are always challenged. Every match is a different test. It all helps me become a better player, but it’s hard work.

“I think the defenders and goalkeeper are doing a great job, while we forwards also know that, if we don’t allow chances at the back, then sooner or later we’ll score a goal. Conte always says the striker is the first line of defence, so with Lautaro Martinez, Alexis Sanchez and Andrea Pinamonti, we all try to block the opposition from building out from the back. We make life difficult for them. I think all four of our strikers are very generous and the whole team benefits from that.”
