The German tactician was left unimpressed with the efforts of his two compatriots at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan on Wednesday evening.

Thomas Tuchel admits Timo Werner and Kai Havertz “did not have their best day” during Chelsea’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash with Porto.

Chelsea emerged 2-0 victorious in the ‘home’ leg, courtesy of Mason Mount’s splendid strike and Ben Chilwell’s late goal.

The scoreline, however, isn’t a very accurate reflection of the performance of the two teams as, apart from that moment of magic from Mount, chances were hard to find for the English hosts against their Portuguese counterparts.

Werner lacked efficiency in the final third of the pitch while Havertz also struggled to get into the game and both were subbed off just after the hour mark.

“I accept that it was a tough match for Timo and for Kai today, they did not have their best day and we did not deliver so good, the connection between the deep seven players that we needed for the build-up and the front three, we lost a bit the connection to them,” Tuchel said post-match, via Goal.

“To have a bit more of an impact, the balls we delivered were not the best balls. I could feel our two German players up front, Kai and Timo, do not play on their highest level today so I wanted to have an impact from the bench.
