The FC Barcelona coach met with the new president over the international to discuss the club’s future plans.

Ronald Koeman feels completely supported by new Barcelona president Joan Laporta and the board of directors, and he revealed they are already hard at work trying to improve the club.

Koeman met Laporta during the international break to discuss plans at Camp Nou.

To nobody’s surprise, Barcelona’s upturn in form under Koeman has impressed the new president and his board. The Blaugrana are unbeaten in 18 LaLiga games, moved within four points of leaders Atletico Madrid, and have a Copa del Rey final with Athletic Club later this month.

“[The board] have given me confidence and they are very happy,” revealed Koeman in a press conference ahead of Barcelona’s LaLiga match against Real Valladolid on Monday.

“But it’s normal because we could not have expected in November that we would be fighting for LaLiga and the Copa. But we know that we must continue working, winning the games and, as the president said on the day he was presented, the confidence is there.”

Focus is on the season, not transfers

Amid growing speculation linking Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland to Camp Nou, Koeman refused to discuss transfers. His priority instead is to finish the current season on a strong note.

“It’s normal to talk in the last part of the season about the next one,” said the Dutchman.

“Now I am not interested in the names that are mentioned. We have to be aware of the ten remaining matches and the Copa del Rey final.”

Koeman continued: “Everyone, including the president, is working to improve the team knowing the economic situation of the club, which is not the best.

“A lot of that is down to COVID. They have shown me from the first day that they will try to improve this situation and, in terms of signings, everything depends on the possibilities we have.”
