As we hoped he could return before the end of the season, FC Barcelona just offered a fresh update on Phil Coutinho’s knee injury.

FC Barcelona’s fresh update on Phil Coutinho’s knee injury is not good, the man was expected to return before the end of the season. However, the recovery hasn’t gone as expected and Phil will need a second professional opinion. When he got injured against Eibar on December 29, he was initially believed to recover in three months. However, he got a second surgery at the start of 2021 and prolonged his recovery time.

In the latest update from the doctors, it appears Coutinho is not getting the recovery he expected and decisions had to be made. The club issued the following statement through their official website: “The first team player Philippe Coutinho is off to Brazil for a medical treatment on his knee injury. The Brazilian was injured on 29 December in a game at Camp Nou against Eibar. Philippe Coutinho has played 90 games for FC Barcelona, scoring 24 goals, three of which have come this season.”

Laporta won’t be able to sell Coutinho.

This new setback also represents a huge hurdle in Joan Laporta’s transfer plans for next summer. Coutinho was one of the high profile players who were supposed to leave some money to the club with a transfer to a new club. However, selling the Brazilian star while he is injured is practically impossible right now. Early predictions suggest Coutinho won’t be able to play until the end of the season.

This leaves no chance for Laporta to use him as a bargaining chip due to his inactivity. All Barcelona can do is wait and see how well he recovers from this serious injury. Hopefully, his time in Brazil will help him get back to the level that brought him to the elite level in European football. Otherwise, Coutinho could be the biggest transfer flop in FC Barcelona’s history.
