During an interview with Sky Sport Germany, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed how much Barcelona’s economic crisis surprised him.
Having a billion-euro debt like Barcelona does would leave anybody flustered, even Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. The former player is part of the board of directors at Bayern Munich and he makes most of the club’s important decisions. As the CEO, he takes extra special care of the club’s economy. Historically, Bayern Munich never wanted to spend too much money on players who can jeopardize their economic model.
They are a club in which players make the conscientious decision to play there for prestige over money. If a player goes after the millions at Bayern Munich, the club immediately refuses to consider him as an option. That’s why major clubs such as Bayern Munich or Real Madrid have so much success. They refuse to give value to a single player above the institution. When the recent debt from Barcelona came to light, Rummenigge couldn’t believe it.
Rummenigge explains Bayern Munich’s model.
In an interview with Sky Sports Germany, Bayern’s CEO decided to offer a masterclass on how to handle a giant football club. He said: “If Bayern had that debt, I couldn’t sleep peacefully at night. But I don’t think it’s going to change anything. A club like Barcelona is not just going to sink for the enormous value it has for a region like Catalonia.
“Of course, I deeply regret that clubs can get into debt in this way. At Bayern, we were and continue to be model children taking into account what happens in Barcelona or in Italy, where salaries are no longer even paid. Here we pursue sporting success, on the one hand, and economic stability, on the other. I read about Barcelona’s debts while having breakfast and I almost choked.”
