In an interview before the Barcelona elections, one of the main candidates for the presidency confirmed they can’t afford Kylian Mbappe.

Kylian Mbappe is the type of player who can improve a club in a crisis like FC Barcelona, if only they could afford him. It’s been years since the Catalan club spent their money wisely. The last time they splashed the cash was to buy Antoine Griezmann and we all know how that’s going. Buying Kylian Mbappe can be considered one of those safe bets, but Victor Font seems to think they won’t be able to afford him.

As of right now, the French forward is one of the most expensive players in the world at €180 million. Transfermarkt is keeping the same price PSG paid for him regardless of the global pandemic. Font offered an interview where he spoke about Barcelona’s chances to sign Mbappe. The candidate also spoke about the importance of Xavi Hernandez in the club’s future. Finally, he also talked about how much a delayed election can hurt Barcelona.

Font’s concerns as Barcelona’s future president.

“We cannot aspire to sign Mbappe, because there is no money [to do so],” Font told ONDA CERO’s Transistor: “We have to check players whose contracts are ending. The elections delay is not good for Barcelona. After the defeat [to Bayern Munich] in Lisbon we saw clearly that [Lionel] Messi would like to see that there is a sporting project. We have tried to bring about a change through the government. We were the only ones who asked for systems of alternative voting so that the pandemic does not alter the elections, which are essential to guarantee the right to vote.”

“Xavi is a unique asset, and I told myself that we have to create optimal conditions so that it doesn’t happen what happened with [Pep] Guardiola, who came, emptied himself and then left. After Johan [Cruyff] and Pep, Xavi arrives. People have to know this. We want Xavi to be what Ferguson was at Manchester United: coach and general manager.”
