Saul Niguez was on the score-sheet for Atletico Madrid as they clinched a 2-0 win over Sevilla to go four points clear at the top of La Liga.
Goals from Angel Correa and Saul Niguez were enough to see Atletico Madrid ease past Sevilla 2-0 on Tuesday at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
The hosts bounced back from their shock Copa del Rey exit against Segunda B side Cornella to reinstate their title ambitions.
Atletico are now four points clear at the top of the table. It’s even better considering they have two games in hand on rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.
It was far from a ‘brilliant’ performance and more about Los Rojiblancos being diligent in defence and taking their chances when they came.
Atletico took the lead inside 20 minutes. Kieran Trippier returned from his FA-ban and set up the pass for Angel Correa to fire his side ahead.
Simeone’s men doubled their lead in the second half and Trippier was once again involved. The ex-Spurs man started the build-up play to Marcos Llorente, who squared for Saul Niguez. The Spaniard took the pass well before sending his finish past Bono.
“I’m happy to be able to help the team with a goal,” Saul said speaking after the game as quoted by Marca.
“It’s the first that I can dedicate to my wife and my daughter who will soon be born.”
Saul added that the impact he made after coming on as a second-half substitute has helped him regain confidence. However, he’s ready to take his strides game after game only.
“This helps, but what counts is the daily work, not breaking down” he added.
“The work with the people outside the club, not only physical work. Everything helps and the work pays.”
