Former Atletico Madrid legend Paulo Futre spoke about Diego Simeone’s future at the club after a shock exit from Copa del Rey.
Atletico Madrid fans were in shock after Simeone hinted he might not continue being the Colchoneros’ boss next season. However, former Atletico superstar Paulo Futre believes the manager had another motivation for his controversial statement.
“It was brilliant. We are talking about ‘El Cholo’ after 24 hours. We are still talking about him instead of talking about the game. He was very intelligent as always.”
Talking to the Spanish radio show El Larguero, ‘El Portugues’ spoke about his desire as an Atleti fan. Futre believes the manager is vital for the Spanish club’s success.
“‘El Cholo’ is criticized by the Colchoneros after a defeat just like any other manager. But two days later he turns into a legend again, and you don’t touch a legend. When he arrived I said ‘El Cholo’ will have to be the Alex Ferguson of Atletico de Madrid. I believe he already has nine years at the club.
We can never forget the state Atletico was in when he arrived and how they are doing now. With ‘El Cholo’ Atleti became a buying club instead of a selling club again. After hell, he passed along his vision. It took a lot of time to go back to being the great club they used to be.”
Moreover, the Portuguese legend assured Colchoneros about Simeone’s plans for the future.
“I don’t have any doubts [that Simeone will stay]. From the outside, I see he has said in other words ‘leave my players alone’, and he succeeded.”
