In a wild game between Cornella and Atletico, the Catalan club made history in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday evening at their own stadium.

Underdog stories like the one taking place in Cornella tonight are beautiful to watch, especially against clubs like Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros are currently top of the table in the Spanish La Liga but today they were unlucky. There were three key moments for Diego Simeone’s players throughout the match today. One was the unfortunate injury that Jose Maria Gimenez suffered early in the game.

Then we have Cornella’s goal through a set-piece, which actually happened before Gimenez’s injury. Both moments set the precedent for Atletico Madrid’s rest of the 90 minutes. In their attempts to get that equalizer, they found a well-organized defense that never allowed them to take control of the game. But the second half brought us an even more concerning moment for the Colchoneros.

Joao Felix suffers a nasty blow.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, Joao Felix suffered an ankle injury that had to take him out of the game. Initially, nobody thought it was serious but the images tell another story. You can tell from a single picture that Joao’s left ankle is alarmingly swollen.

Diego Simeone tried to do everything in his power to get that equalizer but he eventually faced the truth. A fourth division football club eliminated his powerful squad from Copa del Rey. A historic day for Cornella they will never forget. ‘Cholo’ Simeone even gave props to them after the match for giving him a taste of his own medicine.
