Man United still ‘a few years’ away from challenging for league title

The Red Devils have shown their immense quality at times this season but they are yet to quit their bad habit of being inconsistent.

Manchester United’s utmost priority should just be finishing among a Champions League position, according to Andy Cole.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men started the Premier League campaign in a disappointing fashion, with a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, but now seem to have found their rhythm.

They are yet to be on the losing end of a league scoreline ever since suffering a home defeat to Arsenal at the start of November and boast of a four-match winning streak heading into Wednesday’s clash against Sheffield United.

A win at Bramall Lane could move the Red Devils up to fifth in the table, just five points below leaders Liverpool.

Despite that, Andy Cole isn’t convinced that his former side are capable of giving the other contenders a run for their money in the title race.

Man United were dumped out of Europe’s biggest club stage after finishing third in Group H, and the ex-frontman wants them to concentrate on getting back in the competition.

Cole told The Target Men Podcast: “Manchester United are definitely not contenders for winning the Premier League this season.

“I still think the club are a few years away from realistically competing to win the Premier League.

“I think the priority for Manchester United at the moment is to qualify for the Champions League and to hope to have a good cup run in a domestic competition.

“The best players want to play in the Champions League and without that consistency, there’s not enough clarity to build a squad signing the best players and keeping the best players.

“It’s been one step forwards and two steps back in recent years.”
