Two years ago, an incident in the Championship involving both Bielsa and Lampard resulted in a heavy fine for the Leeds United manager. Ahead of Saturday’s clash between Leeds and Chelsea, the matter has been raised once more.

It is the beginning of 2019, and what is just another Championship game turns into one of the season’s biggest scandals. Leeds United is about to play Derby County, managed by Frank Lampard.

Marcelo Bielsa, represented by a club employee, is caught ‘spying’ on the Rams’ training sessions ahead of their clash. The incident ends up being referred to as ‘Spygate’ and leaves Frank Lampard fuming.

“Yesterday I talked to Frank Lampard and he told me I didn’t respect the fair play rules.”, said Bielsa at the 2019 press conference.

The Leeds United boss ends up having to pay a £200,000 fine to the EFL, as he takes full responsibility for the incident.

Bielsa and Lampard are about to face each other in the Premier League.

The Argentinian manager was questioned about ‘Spygate’, as reporters wanted to know if there was any bad blood left between the managers.

“The relationship I have with him is similar to the ones I have with the rest of my colleagues.”, he assured at his press conference. Bielsa preferred to comment on the match itself.

“This is a moment that has already gone past. It was already resolved by the authorities, who judge how these actions need to be punished.”

Marcelo Bielsa praised Frank Lampard’s work at Chelsea, who has had an eight-game unbeaten run in the Premier League.

“This season he improved the composition of his team, choosing players for the positions he deemed he needed,” he added.

In light of his impressive Championship run, the Argentinian manager has been nominated for FIFA Men’s Coach Award. But with Chelsea’s top-notch display in the league, will he be able to spoil the Blues’ party?
