A former manager is backing Frank Lampard’s purposefully and expensively-assembled team to do a repeat of the 2012 feat and conquer Europe.

Chelsea secured top spot in Champions League Group E after a commanding display against Sevilla on Wednesday night.

The Blues put the Europa League champions to the sword as they romped off to a 4-0 victory at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, with Olivier Giroud scoring all four goals.

Around €250 million was spent in the summer transfer market to bring in the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, and Edouard Mendy by the club to strengthen Frank Lampard’s squad after the manager was devoid of making additions in his first season.

Chelsea’s yet another dominant display in Europe only serves as an indication that the heavy investment is starting to bear fruit.

A former club manager is so convinced of the team’s abilities that he ranks them above powerhouses Real Madrid and FC Barcelona in the Champions League pecking order.

Glenn Hoddle told BT Sport: “Looking at the teams that are there, obviously Liverpool and Manchester City, they are going to be there or thereabouts.

“You can’t look past Bayern Munich because they are so powerful but you have got to put Chelsea up there. For me at this moment, they are above Barcelona and above Real Madrid. They are two massive clubs but Chelsea’s team is better than theirs.

“In this moment in time I think they have got to be looking at going to at least the semi-final and when you get to a semi-final, anything can happen.

“There is more to come from Chelsea.”
