A long-serving Bayern defender is reaching the twilight of his career, and Dayot Upamecano has been suggested as his possible successor.

Jerome Boateng has entered the final year of his Bayern Munich contract but there is no solid news of a renewal yet.

The German international has provided reliability at the back for almost a decade now for the Bavarians, but it appears they do not require his services for much longer.

David Alaba is another dependable player the club could lose, with negotiations regarding contract extension breaking down earlier.

The European and German champions are expected to dip in the next transfer windows for defensive reinforcements with two from their back-four setup at risk of an exit.

A club legend attempts to make Bayern’s scouting job easier as he tips to launch a raid on rivals RB Leipzig for the highly-rated 22-year-old Dayot Upamecano.

Lothar Matthaus told AZ: “Jerome is prone to injury and has reached a certain age at 32.

“One thing is clear, if David Alaba should go alongside Boateng, Bayern will need a replacement.

“There are, of course, some internal solutions: Lucas Hernandez, Niklas Sule, Benjamin Pavard, and the young Tanguy Nianzou. From what I hear, Nianzou must be a giant, a really great talent. Nevertheless, reinforcement from outside would be needed.

“Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano would certainly be a player that would fit very well in terms of quality. He has a release clause that allows him to move for €50m. That would be easy for Bayern.
