Former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet believes Edinson Cavani can prove to be a bargain buy at Manchester United this term.
Gus Poyet is of the opinion that veteran forward Edinson Cavani could go on to be an important player for Manchester United this season.
The 33-year-old Uruguayan striker signed on a free transfer on deadline day but has had to stay patient for his chance to impress at the club. So far, all five of his appearances have come from off the bench.
Cavani opened his account for the Red Devils with a late goal against Everton last weekend. He could make his first start when United take on West Brom next weekend.
And speaking to the Daily Mail, Cavani’s fellow compatriot Poyet stated his belief that he has all his takes to do well in England.
“I think he is going to be more important for Manchester United than people think,” Poyet said.
“Look at the last game at Everton. The result was in the balance, he came off the bench, once chance and bang.
“English football is perfect for Uruguayans because we are passionate. Once we sign a contract, we forget about it because the only thing that matters next is winning. English fans love that.”
Poyet believes Cavani will only get better the fitter he gets and pinpointed his work off the ball as one of his most impressive attributes.
“He makes an incredible amount of runs,” Poyet added.
“Maybe he makes an unbelievable run and the ball isn’t played. The fitter he gets, the more he understands United’s play, the more he will play.”
Cavani is currently on international duty, and scored the opener in Uruguay’s 3-0 win against Colombia in their World Cup qualifier on Friday.
With Anthony Martial yet to really impress this season for United, the ex-PSG man could yet get a decent run at game time in the coming weeks.
