After a narrow victory over West Brom, Jose Mourinho says one cannot expect his Tottenham side to score three or four goals every week.
Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has insisted that his side cannot win by three goals every week and that 1-0 victories are important.
Spurs picked up their fifth win out of eight league games against West Brom on Sunday. They left it late as Harry Kane scored in the 88th minute to win it 1-0.
This is their second 1-0 win of the campaign, as they beat Burnley by the same scoreline on October 26.
The victory moves Spurs to top of the Premier League, but they can be dislodged by Leicester City or Liverpool before the international break.
Mourinho took a lot of joy from his side eking out another victory. He told BBC Sport that it is impossible to win by big margins every game:
“These two wins away 1-0, Burnley and here, they can tell us it is not always possible to play beautiful and to score three or four goals and be fluent. You need to keep clean sheets, we tried to score, we tried and tried and tried. We forced all the way against a very organized opponent.”
“When we scored with five or six minutes to go it was time to fight, time to give everything. This is the way sometimes to win points.”
“We leave on the bus now and we are top of the league and when we arrive in London we could be third so no point to get carried away.”
Mourinho continued on his side’s league position at the time: “Honestly if Liverpool and Leicester win it is not a problem for me at all, the first important thing was to get the three points, three wins in a row for the first time this season and by getting 12 points from 12 away we compensate for the dropped points at home.”
“Now they go to national teams and time for me to have a couple of days rest. I keep saying the same, one day I will be a national team coach and will want to win the same way as they do so I don’t complain when they want their players to win matches.”
