Gerard Pique admits Barcelona are in a difficult but necessary state of transition needed to get them back as one of Europe’s elites.

Pique says Barcelona are undergoing much-needed changes to get themselves to becoming one of the darling sides of Europe.

It was an uncharacteristic season for the Catalan giants the last term as they finished their campaign without a title. The 8-2 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich highlighted the need for drastic changes at the club.

Ronald Koeman was one of those changes to come in as Quique Setien was dismissed. Currently, the Catalan side are still struggling in domestic football but they have excelled in the Champions League so far. Their latest 2-1 win came against Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday night. A goal from Pique proved to be the all-important winner.

Speaking after the game, the Spanish defender took the time to explain the current struggles at the club.

“The club right now is how it is,” Pique said as quoted by Express Sport. “It’s in a process of many changes, changes I think are necessary.

“We needed to turn things around. It was obvious that we were in decline and every year we were a little worse.”

“We don’t have much time, but we need it to improve. There’s never a transition year at Barcelona, you’re always obliged to win.”

“Now we have elections and a new president and board will come in and we will see changes in the coming months little by little.”

Speaking on their contrasting form domestically and on the continental front, Pique admitted there was a need for change.

“In the meantime, we have to keep on competing, but it’s not easy because of the circumstances. Not just relating to what’s going on at the club, but because we’re here with no fans as well.”

“Things have gone well in the Champions League, but in La Liga, we have to change and we’re going to change.”

For their next outing, Barcelona take on Real Betis next at the Camp Nou on Saturday. They will be aiming to get back to winning ways after failing to win in their last four league outings.
