Liverpool will put their shock defeat to Aston Villa away and go out guns blazing against Everton, believes ex-Red Danny Murphy.
Liverpool boasted a perfect record this season prior to their visit to Birmingham. However, it came to a disappointing end as they ended up the victims of a stunning 7-2 defeat at Villa Park.
If they intend to bounce back in style, it won’t be an easy job. After the international break, the Reds take on Everton in the Merseyside derby. This time the Toffees are a different side and are one of the only two sides yet to taste defeat so far this season.
As it stands, many even think Everton could go on to beat Liverpool as well. Rather than see it that way, Murphy believes the loss will help the Reds even more lethal and dangerous when they travel to face their local rivals at Goodison Park.
“For the first time for many years, the blue half of the city will understandably go into the game expecting to win but in football you are best to be careful, particularly given a team as good as this Liverpool,” Murphy wrote for the Daily Mail.
“We all know Jurgen Klopp’s men have great resilience and character besides their obvious quality. They have jumped over nearly every hurdle in the past couple of seasons and bounced back from losing European finals, let alone one league game at Villa Park.”
“If I was in the blue dressing-room, I would say beware the wounded animal, particularly as Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson, and Thiago Alcantara should be all right to return.”
Murphy believes that the empty stadium is another factor that will count against the hosts.
“This is a fascinating game because of Everton’s revival, but they will miss the momentum they would have got from their fans,” he added.
In six days from now, we will know the answer to Murphy’s claims when Liverpool take on Everton in the Premier League.
The result could say a lot about both sides’ supposed ambitions this season.
