Pundit Alex Crook has tagged Manchester United’s pursuit of Edinson Cavani a ‘panic buy’ ahead of the striker’s imminent move.

In what was an unexpected turn of events from the weekend, Edinson Cavani is set to join Manchester United.

The Uruguayan forward is said to have undergone a medical today and will join the Red Devils on a two-year contract.

Cavani will join United after a seven-year stint with PSG where he scored 200 goals and is also their record scorer.

Given his age at 33, there are doubts on whether the forward will be able to make an impact in the Premier League.

Moreso, Cavani has a woeful injury record if one is to go with the last 12 months.

Looking closer at the imminent deal, talkSPORT pundit Alex Crook has hit out at United’s transfer business and labels their pursuit of the Uruguayan unnecessary and a panic buy.

“It was all about investing in youth; the days of paying big money to these signings – Alexis Sanchez, Radamel Falcao, Angel Di Maria – were supposed to be in the past.” Crook said to talkSPORT.

“I think Jadon Sancho was the one – is still the one – Solskjaer wants to bring to Old Trafford, but for some reason that is not going to happen and they are going to have to take their chances next summer.”

“I think Cavani is a little bit of a panic buy – I’m not sure he was even second or third on Solskjaer’s list and it’s a worry when you mention the figures involved. It’s our understanding personal terms have been agreed on a two-year contract with Cavani flying into Manchester today to undergo a medical.”

“But he’s 33… and it just smacks of a lack of forward planning in this transfer window.”

Cavani is expected to be officially announced as a Manchester United player on Monday. The Red Devils once signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a 34-year-old back in 2016 and he proved to be an inspired signing at the time.

The hierarchy at Old Trafford will be hoping the Uruguayan forward can bring something similar to his ex-teammate’s impact after his arrival.
