Pirlo: Failure to win against Roma a step backwards for Juventus

Andrea Pirlo feels he was not provided enough time for experimentation with his new team after Juventus’ recent Serie A stalemate.

Juventus slipped up in only the second game with Andrea Pirlo in-charge as they could walk away with only one point from Sunday night’s match at Stadio Olimpico.

Twice did Roma take the lead, each time through Jordan Veretout. And twice did Juve cut their deficit, each time through Cristiano Ronaldo as the match ended 2-2.

The Italian champions were quite sluggish and uncreative, and it did not exactly help when they were forced to play with 10 men following Adrien Rabiot‘s sending off after the hour mark.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, Pirlo expressed his disappointment with what he saw from his side but remained pragmatic.

“It was a step back in terms of performance,” the Juve boss told Sky Sports after the game. “But this is a work in progress and we haven’t had an opportunity to play pre-season friendlies to test these things out.

“We wanted to make the most of one-on-one situations, as we knew Roma would attack in numbers, but it didn’t go quite the way we hoped. It was always going to be tough against an organized team.”
