Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang’s contract extension should be a priority for Arsenal, suggests strike-partner Alexandre Lacazette.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang was one of the very few positives in an otherwise disappointing 2019/20 season for Arsenal.

The Gunners secured a near mid-table finish in the previous Premier League campaign, but they might have even ended up in the bottom half of the table without their prolific skipper.

The Gabon international netted 22 times in 36 league outings, finishing only behind Golden Boot winner Jamie Vardy in the goalscoring charts.

Question marks on his future at the Emirates are yet to cease completely as he is yet to sign a contract extension despite having entered the final year of his current deal.

Highlighting his immense contribution, Alexandre Lacazette suggests his strike partner is too valuable for the team.

“We need him. He has the statistics of a center-forward,” said Lacazette, speaking to L’Equipe.

Aubameyang’s presence in the team means the Frenchman is not the first choice penalty taker at Arsenal, a privilege he enjoyed while at Olypique Lyon.

“It’s true that I don’t take them anymore, but that’s not a problem. I know if I wanted to get one, he would let me have it,” said an unbothered Lacazette.

“If it was getting into my head or if I was into something selfish, I would try to take them or ask him to have one shot out of two, but that’s really not how I see things. He scores them and he saves us, that’s what matters.”
