Liverpool should commit to retaining Georginio Wijnaldum instead of pushing for a deal for Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara, according to Steve Nicol.
Liverpool’s transfer activity this summer has come down to a lone signing of left-back Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos.
However, the Reds are on the trail of wantaway Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara, who has earned high acclaim from Jurgen Klopp.
The 29-year-old has already made up his mind on linking up with the Anfield outfit. It’s now up to the clubs to agree on terms for the Spaniard to swap allegiances.
Concerning the outgoings, Wijnaldum could be the most prominent one, as the Barcelona new boss Ronald Koeman looks to overhaul his squad.
Koeman has added his Dutch compatriot to his wish-list. Barca’s midfield should undergo major changes, with Ivan Rakitic having already left for Sevilla.
Arturo Vidal is also on his way out of Camp Nou, which will free up space for a new midfield addition.
But, Steve Nicol believes Liverpool should do everything in their power to ward off the Catalan’s interest in Wijnaldum.
“If Wijnaldum isn’t desperate to leave, then I’d keep Wijnaldum. I don’t understand why you’d change it, because clearly it’s been successful,” he told ESPN.
“Right now the middle of the park is as strong with regards to physicality and getting the ball back, supplying the front three – it’s one of the best in Europe.
“I think sometimes it’s a little bit dangerous to change things when clearly they’re working.
“I won’t argue that Thiago Alcantara is a fantastic footballer, but is [his arrival] going to upset the apple cart? Why would you gamble right now, when clearly you’re the team that everyone has to beat.”
