'It would be difficult to stay' - Messi's father opens the door for Barca exit

Jorge Messi confirmed that his son will most likely leave Barcelona, but denied talks have begun for a move to Manchester City.

Lionel Messi left the entire football world speechless by handing in a transfer request to Barcelona, outlining plans to activate a clause that would make his contract with the club void. Therefore, he would effectively become a free agent.

Although Barcelona and LaLiga have both stated the option expired on June 10. It leaves him a tricky situation, where an exit is only possible should his €700m release clause be paid.

But Messi’s no-show for pre-season medical checks and training this week, on top of rumors he still believes his Blaugrana days are over, at least proves his resolve to leave remains unwavering.

Now his father and agent, Jorge, has admitted doing a u-turn by staying at Camp Nou would be difficult now.

The Argentine, who arrived in Catalonia on Wednesday morning ahead of talks with the Barcelona board, told El Chiringuito: “Future at Barcelona? Is difficult. It would be difficult to stay.”

Several top clubs have been linked with moves for Messi, including Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan. Although Manchester City, who are coached by his old Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, are the alleged favorites.

There were even rumors on Tuesday night claiming the six-time Ballon d’Or winner accepted a €700m contract, which Jorge has rubbished.

“I haven’t talked with Pep,” he confirmed. “There aren’t nothing yet with City.”

Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font, meanwhile, also expects Messi to leave.
