Pep Guardiola confirmed reports that Sergio Aguero will be unavailable for Manchester City’s Champions League quarter-final match against Lyon on Saturday.

A knee injury sidelined Aguero for Manchester City’s second-leg victory against Real Madrid in the last-16. He hoped to return for the Lyon match on Saturday, but it appears that was never a possibility.

‘Kun’ has been out of action since June, but returned to gym work recently in a bid to step up his recovery.

Reports emerged earlier this week, however, claiming the Argentine would miss the rest of the club’s Champions League campaign. Therefore, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus would shoulder the goal-burden alone.

But while Guardiola said nothing regarding these claims in a press conference on Friday, the City coach confirmed Aguero is unavailable for the Lyon match.

“He is still in Barcelona,” said Guardiola on the club’s website.

“I think he should come here and do a test. He is still in Barcelona making a recovery.”

Losing Aguero could be quite problematic for City considering the striker’s prolific form. He maybe 32 years old now, but he still scored an impressive 16 goals in 24 Premier League games this season.

Injury problems, though, have hindered him greatly all season, restricting him to just 18 starts.
