Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola gave his verdict on how a possible Romelu Lukaku return could affect the squad.
Gianfranco Zola isn’t sold on Chelsea’s pursuit of Romelu Lukaku as he wonders whether it could have the reserve effect on the squad.
Despite Champions League success last season, Chelsea’s lack of attacking threat is a problem. Olivier Giroud has recently joined AC Milan, Tammy Abraham is out of favor, Michy Batshuayi could leave again soon, and Timo Werner hasn’t lived up to his billing in England.
The latter, though, won points at Stamford Bridge for his selfless attitude with 15 assists last season in all competitions, something even Zola appreciates.
“Chelsea had an extraordinary season last year, but the focus was always on the fact that they lacked a goalscorer,” the former Blues striker and assistant coach told Tuttomercatoweb.
“They often created chances, and in some games, they were quite penalized. Lukaku comes in to fill that gap, but I liked Chelsea the way they were.
“Werner did a dirty job for everyone else, and the reason they won the Champions League is that he put others in a position to do well.
“I’m curious to see Lukaku, but I liked Chelsea the way they were.”
