Chelsea drop points at Saint Petersburg!

Chelsea started the game with dominance and got their opener through Timo Werner only two minutes into the game. The Blues were close to doubling their lead several times but were not clinical enough in front of the goal.

Zenit remained in their own half throughout the first period. However, they constantly threatened Chelsea’s backline with speedy counter-attacks. Claudinho scored the equalizer for the hosts in the 38th minute before Sardar Azmoun put them ahead three minutes later.

Chelsea intensified their efforts to mount a comeback in the second half. Romelu Lukako equalized the game again two minutes past the hour-mark. When Werner completed his brace in the 85th minute, it seemed that Chelsea have achieved their goal.

However, it did not take too long before Zenit ruined their night. Following a poor clearance from Malang Sarr, Magomed Ozdoyev made it 3-3 by firing a sensational volley from the edge of the box.

Juventus qualified as the group leaders as they managed to beat Malmo in the group’s other game of the night. Zenit qualified for the Europa League as they finished third behind Chelsea. Malmo finished fourth as they ended the competition with one point.

Following the draw against Zenit, Chelsea will face Leeds United in their next league game on Saturday.
