Diego Simeone has come under scathing criticism after Atletico Madrid were dumped out of the Champions League by RB Leipzig.

Daniel Olmo opened the scoring in the opening exchanges of the second half for RB Leipzig. His efforts were undone as Joao Felix converted from the spot after being brought down in the area by Marcel Sabitzer.

There was late drama akin to PSG’s triumph over Atalanta. Tyler Adams hit the back of the net from a deflected shot. Atletico Madrid’s dreams were shattered as they were knocked out of the elite European cup competition.

Los Rojiblancos fans have not taken their ousting from Champions League lightly. There were calls for Simeone’s axing which has brought a stinging reply from Atletico president, Enrique Cerezo.

Cerezo admitted that El Cholo’s team selection could be questioned. However, he stated that Simeone is the final authority on it as it is his domain. The president stood firm behind him and told dissenting fans to buy their own clubs to enforce their say on team selection.

“Simeone is not untouchable and many disagreed with him yesterday. He is the one who picks the team and if you don’t like it then go and buy your own club, build your own team and choose your own XI,” the Independent quoted Cerezo said.

Cerezo attributed the frustrations to fans’ high expectations and reflected that these things are part of the game.

“The fans are frustrated and it’s bad because the truth is we weren’t expecting a result like that. But that’s football, these things happen,” Cerezo added.

“I think we have had a very good season, we’ve finished in the top three in La Liga and qualified for the Champions League, which is no easy thing to do.”
