The mercurial Argentine is set to create more history in the famous red and blue stripes when he takes to the pitch on Monday night.

Xavi Hernandez says he will be honored to see Lionel Messi match and eventually surpass his FC Barcelona all-time appearance record.

Messi will make his 767th appearance for Barcelona if, or rather when, he starts in the upcoming La Liga outing against Huesca.

The record six-time Ballon d’Or winner has a career-long association with the Catalan club, having joined their famed youth academy La Masia at the raw age of 12 back in 2000.

He has won a total of 22 trophies since then, scored 659 goals across all competitions, and rewritten history many times.

Messi is now set to reach another major milestone in his illustrious Barcelona career, and Xavi could not be happier to see his former teammate break his record.

The Spaniard told Mundo Deportivo: “You could see that Leo would end up surpassing me.

“If he did not leave Barca it was clear that he would add many more games and he is still young to continue playing, he has a lot of football left, so he can play many more games.

“It had to be Leo. It is fair that the best player in history is the one who has played in the Barca shirt the most times.

“It is an honor that the best player in the world, and for me in history, is the one who surpasses me.

“Leo is like that, he’s insurmountable, you can’t compete with him because he always wins.”
