De Jong might join Barcelona’s defensive line if he insists on staying at Camp Nou.
Xavi Hernandez has suggested he might use Frenkie de Jong as a centre-back at Barcelona.
Manchester United have had an agreement in place with Barcelona over De Jong’s transfer for the past couple of weeks.
However, the Dutchman has refused to join United, insisting he wants to continue playing for the Catalans.
Xavi has admitted Barca’s financial situation might force them to sell the star midfield. However, he has suggested the Dutchman might play in a completely different role if he stay at Camp Nou next season.
“Frenkie? I don’t send messages, I spoke with him. I like him a lot,” the Barcelona boss told reporters.
“For me, he is a fundamental footballer but there is also the economic situation and fair play. He can bring us a lot as a centre-back. I like him in that position.”
Barcelona are reportedly open to selling De Jong this summer. The Spanish giants might be able to avoid activating a third financial ‘lever’ if they sell the Dutchman.
De Jong is also owed €20m in deferred wages at Barca, which the club are refusing to pay. His potential departure could strengthen the club’s position to finalize a deal for Jules Kounde, who is their main target for the team’s defensive line.
