The Spanish boss insists Barcelona must everything they can to ensure Gavi and Ronald Araujo will stay at the club.

Ronald Araujo, who joined Barcelona’s reserve team in 2018, has developed into one of La Liga‘s best defenders during the past two seasons.

The Uruguayan defender has featured in 22 La Liga games this season, scoring a header in his latest one against Real Madrid. However, the Catalans are struggling to reach an agreement with Araujo over a contract extension.

Another player whose contract negotiations are stalled is Gavi. The La Masia product has adapted incredibly well to Xavi’s possession-based football, establishing his place in the starting lineup under the club legend.

In an interview ahead of his side’s crunch league game against Sevilla, Xavi reacted to reports around Araujo and Gavi’s potential exits.

He said: “They are very important. The club cannot allow either of them to leave.

“They are transcendent footballers. I think their renewals are a matter of time. I want to think that the two of them will stay and reach an agreement with the club. I’m optimistic.”

Asked about Dembele’s situation, the Barcelona boss said: “I see him very happy and very involved.

“I have no complaints about him. It depends on him, that’s clear. He plays at a high level and if he works hard he can be the best in the world in his position.

“In addition, he is making a difference. For the way I want to play, he’s very good.”
