The Catalans have suffered serious injury blows in their backline lately.

Xavi Hernandez has admitted he might use Frenkie de Jong as a centre-back at Barcelona upon his return from injury.

Following a frustrating defeat against Inter, the Catalans return to La Liga to host Celta Vigo on Sunday.

De Jong returned to Barcelona after sustaining an injury during the international break. However, Xavi says the midfielder is ready to play for his side in the upcoming game.

“He’s 100 per cent. We’ll see what we decide tomorrow,” Xavi told reporters.

“Frenkie can play centre-back, we’ve already tried it. He is powerful and fast, but there are other alternatives. There is versatility in the dressing room.”

With the likes of Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, and Jules Kounde being out with injuries, it won’t be surprising to see De Jong fill the gap.

Another option is Chadi Riad, a 19-year-old academy star who is yet to make his senior debut for the Catalans.

“We know him from last year and the pre-season,” Xavi said.

“He is aggressive, with good output … he has a future. We follow him. He can prove things, he can become important.”

Barcelona sit at the top of the La Liga table with 19 points from their seven league games.

Given their current goal difference, Xavi’s side could maintain their place by beating Celta in the upcoming match.
