The former Blues star believes an England international can secure football’s most prestigious individual prize.

Shaun Wright-Phillips has backed Mason Mount to claim the Ballon d’Or by continuing his development at Chelsea.

Mount has established himself as a key figure in Chelsea’s lineup after coming through the Blues’ academy ranks. He provided a brilliant assist for Kai Havertz’s Champions League-winning goal in the 2021-22 final against Manchester City.

Having already won Europe’s biggest trophy at the age of 23, Mount has the majority of his career ahead of him to push for more team and individual trophies.

Speaking to Genting Casino, Wright-Phillips picked Mount as a Chelsea player who could win the Ballon d’Or in the future.

“He’s played so well and is carrying Chelsea on his shoulders and helped them get into the Champions League,” the former Chelsea star said. “But people need to remember how young he is and that he’s still got a lot to learn.

“If Chelsea were to win trophies and Mason Mount is the stand out player, then there is no reason why he couldn’t win the Ballon d’Or one day.”

Asked about Chelsea’s transfer plans, Wright-Phillips picked his favourite player to replace Romelu Lukaku.

He added: Robert Lewandowski would be the perfect replacement for Romelu Lukaku if Lukaku does leave. No matter what team he plays in, he always scores goals.”

Chelsea will start their pre-season with a friendly match against Club America on July 17.
