Ian Wright and Ashley Cole have jumped in defense of Chelsea star amid recent criticism while on international duty with England.

Ian Wright and Ashley Cole have slammed those saying Mason Mount should be dropped for England and replaced with Jack Grealish.

Over the past few months, it’s been a recurring theme to see people question why the Chelsea man gets a starting berth over the Aston Villa captain.

It has been a question for much debate with Mason Mount himself even saying there is no such ‘rivalry’ with Grealish.

Gareth Southgate is well aware of all of these and perhaps attempted to quell such thoughts when he started both players in England’s 3-0 win over the Republic of Ireland on Thursday night.

Coincidentally, both players did well respectively and put in assured performances in midfield.

Ian Wright has spoken about this same topic before and once again disagrees with how Mount has been treated by the public so far.

“You know what? I think it’s disgraceful the way people have talked about Mason Mount getting his berth in front of whoever” Wright told ITV as quoted by Football365.

“Mount is in there on credit and what he’s able to do. It’s unfair the amount of stick he gets for being chosen by Gareth.”

In the same vein, Chelsea legend Ashley Cole also says the comparisons between Mount and Grealish are baseless.

“You can’t compare them,” Cole added.

“The quality that Mount brings to not just this England team but the Chelsea team.”

“He brings that energy, the willingness to run and graft.”

“I’ve heard Roy [Keane] mention it a lot of times about that desire and work ethic: it’s a must and it is a standard. He brings that week in week out but with quality as well so I think it’s unfair to compare them.”
