Fans can only drink alcoholic beverages in certain locations and at certain times during the tournament.
Despite Qatar’s strict policies on alcoholic drinks, World Cup fans can drink alcohol in the tournament’s official fan zone.
An agreement between the local authorities, FIFA, and Budweiser allows fans to enjoy alcoholic beverages after 6:30 p.m. each night.
“Inside the stadium bowl ticket holders will have access to non-alcoholic Budweiser Zero. At the FIFA Fan Festival, Budweiser will be available to purchase from 6.30 p.m.,” FIFA’s official statement reads.
The upcoming tournament will bring around one million supporters to Qatar. The Muslim-majority country only allows alcohol at certain licensed hotels and restaurants.
The recent decision to ease the alcohol ban will most likely attract more fans to the tournament. Budweiser, who has been the exclusive World Cup beer brand since 1986, decided to extend its partnership with FIFA after they confirmed Qatar as host in 2011.
In a similar situation in 2014, the beer company managed to compromise a deal with Brazilian authorities to sell beer inside the stadiums.
Qatari authorities tested the new policies during the 2019 Club World Cup, which saw Liverpool win the title. The global tournament will kick off on November 20.
