Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers lock horns on Monday night for another round of Premier League football.

Three points separate them in the standings, yet Southampton sit seven places above Wolves in fifth. The Saints have been in brilliant form and are gunning to regain their top-four spot, meaning only a victory will do.

It should be an enticing match despite the hosts’ lack of goals this season. Both teams have scored in their last three encounters and registered one win, draw, and defeat apiece.

And while facing Wolves at Molineux is a notoriously arduous task, Southampton are flying high under Ralph Hasenhuttl and will head to the West Midlands with all guns blazing.

Wolves Form & Stats

Wolves return from the international break on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Leicester City. A 15th-minute Jamie Vardy penalty proved the difference at the King Power Stadium, inflicting a third defeat on them.

Nuno Espirito Santo has had to adapt following the departures of key players, including Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota. Although, by all means, it’s been a relatively respectable start in their latest Premier League campaign.

Things began on a sour note in defeats to Manchester City and West Ham in their opening three games. But, until they met Leicester, Wolves had gone four games unbeaten and won three times. Now it’s just a matter of getting back into their sweet spot.

The Wanderers’ lack of threat in the attack, however, is a cause of concern. They boast the league’s fourth-worst goal record on eight goals, with Raul Jimenez scoring half of them. But in Southampton, who have conceded three times in two of their last four league games, may lie an opportunity to fix that.

Key Team Stats
  • Won three of their last five league games (D1 L1).
  • Only scored more than one goal twice in their eight league games this season.
  • Won six of their last 10 home league games (D2 L2).
  • Raul Jimenez has scored three goals in four league games against Southampton.

Southampton Form & Stats

Nobody would’ve put their money on Southampton challenging for a top-four spot at this stage of the season after losing to Crystal Palace and Tottenham in their first two games. They also lost to Brentford in the EFL Cup to make it three defeats in a row.

But six games without a single loss have transformed their fortunes. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men won five of those fixtures, with a 3-3 draw away to Chelsea being the only time they’ve failed to win since September 20. They even briefly topped the Premier League standings after beating Newcastle 2-0 last time out.

The only club to better Southampton’s unbeaten run is joint-league leaders Tottenham on seven. Although making it four wins in a row for the first time since 2016 would be a much more satisfying stat. It would also bolster the growing confidence inside Hasenhuttl’s squad.

Che Adams and James Ward-Prowse, meanwhile, have stepped in to supply the goals following Danny Ings’ knee injury. But conceding three goals in two of their last two away games may concern Hasenhuttl.

Key Team Stats
  • Unbeaten in their last six league games (W5 D1).
  • Been ahead at half-time in five of their last six league games.
  • Lost just one of their last nine away league games (W5 D3).
  • Scored at least two goals in six of their last nine away league games.
  • Conceded three goals in their last two away league games.
