The Blues slipped back to the tenth spot on the Premier League table after another disappointing defeat.

Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Chelsea 2-1 in their Premier League game on Sunday. Mauricio Pochettino’s wasteful men were punished by two second-half goals from the hosts.

What happened?

Chelsea started off as the better side as Wolves gave away several opportunities under pressure. Raheem Sterling came the closest to putting the visitors after a mix-up between Jose Sa and Joao Gomes, but the Wolves goalkeeper redeemed himself with an excellent save.

Wolves gradually found their feet in the game as the first half went on but had to wait until after the break to score the opening goal. Mario Lemina converted Pablo Sarabia’s corner with a towering header to put the hosts ahead in the 51st minute.

The goal forced Chelsea to put more bodies forward as they pushed to get a quick equalizer. The Blues put their opponents and came close to scoring their first goal of the night through Christopher Nkunku just after the hour-mark.

However, it was Wolves who secured their victory with another goal in the 93rd minute. Benoit Badiashile’s poor clearance of Hugo Bueno’s cutback found Matt Doherty, who smashed it into the corner of the net with a precise low shot.

Only two minutes later, Nkunku scored his first goal for Chelsea to make it 2-1. But it was already too late for Pochettino’s men to escape the defeat at Molineux.

Wolves vs Chelsea: Man of the Match

Christopher Nkunku is an honourable mention as he made a brilliant Premier League debut after coming off the bench in the 59th minute. However, our pick for the Man of the Match title is Wolves’ Mario Lemina.

In addition to scoring his side’s opening goal, the Gabonese star’s dominating presence in the midfield disrupted Chelsea’s buildup play throughout the game.
