The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender believes one of the Gunners’ summer signings is already in trouble.
William Gallas has expressed his concerns about Kai Havertz’s start at Arsenal ahead of his return to Chelsea.
The 24-year-old Germany international swapped Chelsea for London rivals Arsenal in the summer. The Gunners paid a £65 million transfer fee. They planned to reshape the player, who has struggled to exert his best performance since moving to England in 2020.
But Havertz has faced difficulties adapting to Arsenal’s style of play. He has frequently played in central midfield, contributing one goal and one assist in 12 games across all competitions.
“I don’t think Arsenal should have signed Kai Havertz. I think that was a mistake,” Gallas said to Lord Ping.
“‘Havertz hasn’t done anything yet, and I think he’s in trouble.
“If you spent £60 million on a striker, you expect them to score at least 15 goals in a season! I don’t think that’ll happen.”
Gallas also dismissed the notion that Havertz needs more time to adapt. He emphasized that players, even those transitioning to new teams, need to adapt fast. He added that as the German has already been living in London and playing in the Premier League for the past three years, adapting should’ve been a lot easier for him.
Havertz will return to Stamford Bridge on Saturday for the first time since his summer move.
The former Chelsea player will hope to make the line-up when Arsenal take on the Blues in a Premier League match.
