Liverpool star Georgino Wijnaldum has opened up on what teammate Virgil Van Dijk is going through as he recovers from injury.
Van Dijk is going through a difficult spell as he recovers from injury, says Liverpool teammate Georgino Wijnaldum.
The Dutchman is likely to be out for the remainder of the season after being crocked by Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby.
Van Dijk suffered knee ligament damage which is among one of the worse injuries to sustain as a footballer.
The recovery period is usually at least 12-14 months but can be longer in some cases.
It means it will be heavily unlikely Liverpool will be able to call upon his services this season.
But Van Dijk has undergone successful surgery and is now in the process of recovery.
And Wijnaldum has given an update on his countryman, admitting he is going through a tough period.
“Virgil will return with God’s will,” Wijnaldum told Voetbal International.
“It is a difficult time for him; this is the worst thing you can experience as a football player.”
“You go through hell. But I think he is very strong. We FaceTime every now and then and that is very nice.”
Liverpool have already called upon a number of replacements in the absence of Van Dijk.
Fabinho was touted as the ideal man to come in but he also has suffered from an injury.
Joel Matip is the latest but his fitness issues are well known to the club and then the youngsters are left.
