The Brazilian star is set to take an indefinite “period of absence” from United’s squad.
Manchester United have confirmed their decision to exclude Antony from their squad.
This unexpected move comes as the Brazilian player finds himself embroiled in serious allegations of abuse made by his ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavalin.
Both Antony and the club issued statements addressing the situation on Sunday.
What has Man Utd said?
After much speculation in recent days, Man Utd have finally announced their decision to give Antony a leave of absence.
“Manchester United condemns acts of violence and abuse. We recognize the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse,” the club’s statement reads.
The club further stated that players who have not participated in international matches were scheduled to return to training on Monday. However, an agreement was reached with Antony to delay his return to the team until further notice to address the allegations.
In response to the allegations and the club’s decision, Antony released a statement of his own. The 23-year-old said, “I have agreed with Manchester United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me. This was a mutual decision to avoid distraction to my teammates and unnecessary controversy for the club.”
Antony has repeatedly denied the accusations against him, expressing his commitment to cooperating with the police to help uncover the truth.
Allegations Against Antony
The allegations against Antony stem from his former partner Gabriela Cavallin, who has accused him of physical and mental abuse. These allegations are currently under investigation by police forces in both Sao Paulo and Manchester.
Additionally, two other women have come forward with claims of violence involving Antony in recent days. Rayssa de Freitas filed a police report in Brazil alleging that Antony injured her during an incident in São Paulo in May 2022. Another woman named Ingrid Lana appeared on Brazilian television, alleging that Antony pushed her against a wall, causing her to hit her head, at his Manchester residence in October of the previous year.
The situation remains fluid as investigations continue, leaving Antony’s future at Manchester United uncertain.
