Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam gave his opinion of the €75 million summer signing’s struggles in front of goal in the Premier League.

Rasmus Hojlund is struggling in a Manchester United team that lacks confidence and perhaps in quality as well, according to Jaap Stam.

Hojlund has lit up the scoreboard in the Champions League this season, with five goals in four games. Yet, nine games into his Premier League career, the 20-year-old striker has yet to find the back of the net.

This comes as United struggle to click into gear. The Red Devils have struggled to match last season’s performance. They’re down in sixth place in the Premier League, bottom of Group A in the Champions League, and eliminated from the EFL Cup.

“The thing about him, when he comes to such a big club as a very young man, is that it is not easy for him to show his qualities. Because he also needs the players around him,” Stam said of Hojlund to Soccernews and Tipsbladet.

“He needs them to put him on stage and give him opportunities to score. He plays in a team that lacks confidence. He has players around him who don’t have the confidence and maybe not even the qualities to play at this level. So it’s not going to be easy for him, but he’s just going to have to do what he can.”

Nonetheless, Stam praised Hojlund’s qualities in the interview, noting his left leg ability, physique, and speed.

The former Atalanta star withdrew from the Denmark squad during the international break because of an injury. United hope to have him back before the end of November, but it’s unclear if he’ll be ready in time to face Everton this Sunday.
