Will Atletico win a first title in seven seasons? Or will Real Madrid and Barcelona’s dominance continue? The CIES answers the big question.
It is good news for Atletico Madrid indeed as the CIES Football Observatory has tipped Diego Simeone’s men to win the 2020/21 La Liga title.
The capital giants currently hold a five-point lead over neighbors Real Madrid, with third-place Barcelona a further three points back, and have two games in hand over the former and one over the latter.
With such an advantage, along with the club’s fine form, it’s no surprise Atletico are favorites. That said, it will be a close call. The CIES has predicted Barcelona will finish only three points behind them in second place, with Real Madrid and Sevilla completing the top-four.
The Swiss-based sports research organization based their projection on how the season would end using a statistical model that accounts for a club’s shots on target, attempted and conceded shots inside the box, ball possession, and passes made in games.
