Check out Manchester United’s options to replace Antony amid ongoing investigations. Who will step up in this unexpected absence?

Manchester United forward Antony has found himself embroiled in a series of assault allegations recently.

These allegations have not only led to his exclusion from the Brazilian national squad but have also prompted Manchester United to grant him a period of absence.

This unexpected setback has left fans and critics alike wondering who will replace the Brazilian star in Erik ten Hag’s lineup.

A new selection headache for Ten Hag

Antony’s arrival at Man Utd came with high expectations and a hefty price tag following his transfer from Ajax. Although he has played nearly 50 games for the club, he has yet to win over all the fans and critics. Manager Erik Ten Hag has consistently included him in the starting lineup due to the absence of a world-class right-winger in the squad.

However, with Antony now sidelined temporarily, Ten Hag faces additional challenges, especially considering the club’s existing injury woes.

(Non) Existing options

As things stand, the squad’s only recognized right-wingers, apart from Antony, are Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri. However, Diallo is currently sidelined with a long-term injury and is expected to miss a substantial portion of the 23/24 season. This leaves Pellistri as a potential replacement, but Ten Hag may also consider reshuffling positions to fill the void.

Jadon Sancho, with his versatility to play on the right, is an option, but his relationship with the manager appears strained. There are even reports suggesting Manchester United’s desire to part ways with Sancho. If Sancho fails to mend his relationship with the coaching staff, Bruno Fernandes could be a viable alternative on the right flank.

A new midfield formation?

Last season, Fernandes occasionally played as a right-sided forward, and Ten Hag’s recent acquisition of Amrabat provides further flexibility in midfield. With Amrabat and Casemiro anchoring the midfield, Christian Eriksen in the No. 10 role, and Fernandes out wide, Manchester United’s attack could adapt to this change.

However, this tactical adjustment may work seamlessly only if Antony’s absence is limited to a few matches. Eriksen’s fitness and availability for each game remain a concern, and with Mason Mount sidelined due to injury, the club must ensure Antony’s return before the crucial Champions League group stage matches, which include a fixture against Bayern Munich.
