The Super Eagles have discovered their group-stage rivals ahead of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers.

The draw for the World Cup 2026 qualifiers took place in Abidjan, revealing Nigeria’s opponents in Group C.

The Super Eagles will face tough competition as they aim to secure their seventh World Cup appearance. The group consists of Benin Republic, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Lesotho.

Let’s review Nigeria’s rivals as they start their qualification journey for the World Cup’s next edition.

South Africa

South Africa, ranked 62nd by FIFA, poses a significant challenge. They have participated in the World Cup three times, reaching the group stage in 1998, 2002, and 2010. Under the guidance of coach Hugo Broos, South Africa will aim to put up a strong fight. Nigeria must be wary of Percy Tau, who has been in impressive form, scoring 14 goals in 39 games for his country. However, history favours Nigeria, as they have never lost to South Africa in a World Cup qualifying match.

Benin

Benin, led by former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, presents an intriguing challenge. Although they have yet to make a World Cup appearance, Benin boast experienced players like Stéphane Sessègnon. Nigeria has never lost to Benin and holds a memorable 10-1 victory over them.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe, ranked 124th by FIFA, dreams of making their World Cup debut. Led by coach Shepherd Murape, Zimbabwe will rely on defensive solidity and the attacking prowess of players like Admiral Muskwe and Tino Kadewere. Nigeria has a dominant record against Zimbabwe, winning four out of five previous encounters.

Rwanda

Rwanda, ranked 139th by FIFA, seeks their first-ever World Cup qualification. Led by coach Carlos Alós, Rwanda faces an uphill battle. Nigeria has emerged victorious in all four meetings with “Amavubi”.

Lesotho

Lesotho, ranked 152nd by FIFA, enter Group C as the underdogs. Lesotho haven’t found the back of the net against Nigeria in their last four encounters. Their records against Zimbabwe and South Africa are also not impressive.

However, Leslie Notsi’s men have shown fantastic defensive form in their COSAFA Cup matches this summer. Lesotho have reached the tournament’s final, where they will take on Zambia this Sunday.
