Another mid-season transfer window ended with a few surprising names finding themselves among the top spenders.

The January transfer window ended without Kylian Mbappe moving to Real Madrid or Manchester United signing a new striker. The mid-season market was dominated by loan moves, but there were still several high-profile switches as teams prepared their squads for the second half of the 2023-24 campaign.

Let’s take a look at the January window’s top five spending clubs based on data from Transfermarkt.

5- Zenit St. Petersburg

As the Russian Premier League’s thrilling title race continues, Zenit bolstered their squad with three transfers from Brazil. Artur and Pedro were added to Zenit’s attacking line from Palmeiras and Corinthians, respectively. The club also added another centre-back to their squad by signing Nino from Fluminense, taking their total January spending to €29.85million.

4- Bayern Munich

Bayern come into the January transfer window with the clear objective of signing a new defender. The arrival of Eric Dier from Tottenham was, however, followed by two more signings. The Bavarians completed a €30million move for Galatasary defender Sacha Boey before adding Bryan Zaragoza to their ranks. The Granada forward was initially set to join the team in the summer, but Kingsley Coman’s injury forced Bayern to pay another €5million to complete the move mid-season. The Bundesliga champions spent a total of €35million in the winter transfer window.

3- PSG

After a rocky start to the season, Paris Saint-Germain hope to build on their newly-found form under Luis Enrique in the second half of the campaign. The Ligue 1 giants added two Brazilian stars to their squad, signing Lucas Beraldo from Sao Paulo and Gabriel Moscardo from Corinthians for a total of €40m. The former is a centre-back expected to improve PSG’s defensive squad depth, while 18-year-old Moscardo arrives as one of the most exciting young midfielders in the Brazilian Serie A.

2- Barcelona

Barcelona completed an already-agreed move for Athletico Paranaense’s Vitor Roque, bolstering their attacking line with an exciting young forward. Roque has found a solid start to his career in Spain, scoring a match-winner for the Catalans in their narrow victory over Osasuna last weekend.

1- Lyon

Lyon had no choice but to spend big this January as they aim to get out of Ligue 1’s relegation zone. Most of their budget was spent on Genk forwards Malick Fofana and Gift Orban. Rennes’ Nemanja Matić was also among Lyon’s signing as well as Botafogo pair Adryelson and Lucas Perri, who are brought in to help with the team’s persisting defensive issues. Lyon ended the transfer window with a total spending of over €50million.
