Let’s check out three potential lineups for Liverpool, incorporating the newly signed Dominik Szoboszlai.
Liverpool has reportedly triggered a €70m release clause to sign Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig. The Hungarian star is set to become the Reds’ second summer signing, following their bargain deal for Alexis Mac Allister.
Jürgen Klopp will have a plethora of options to shape his new midfield and attacking lines with two newcomers. Szoboszlai’s remarkable versatility enables him to excel in various positions, including attacking midfield, as a number eight or ten, and even as a winger on either flank.
Here, we analyze three possible roles the 22-year-old could fulfil in Jürgen Klopp’s lineup for the next season.
A new number 8?
Szoboszlai’s impressive record of 10 goals and 13 assists last season demonstrates his ability to contribute to the team’s attacking output.
If Klopp continues using Trent Alexander-Arnold as a midfielder, the England international could form a double pivot alongside Fabinho, providing Szoboszlai the license to operate.
In this case, Mac Allister’s versatility will add balance on the left.
Dominating the centre
In certain games, Klopp may opt to deploy Alexander-Arnold in his traditional full-back role rather than in midfield.
This formation would feature a three-man midfield, with Szoboszlai playing a deeper number eight role that requires additional defensive responsibilities. This was probably what Klopp had in mind for Jude Bellingham before his move to Real Madrid.
Szoboszlai’s fantastic physicality makes him a perfect choice for this position. But he would still need support from a defensive midfielder. Once again, Fabinho is the favourite candidate to provide defensive cover. However, Liverpool might make a summer move for PSV’s Ibrahim Sangare.
More competition on the wings
Alternatively, Klopp may choose not to use Szoboszlai in midfield at all. Given his displays for RB Leipzig, Szoboszlai could be deployed on the right wing, a position he excelled last season.
This lineup would be particularly useful when giving Mohamed Salah a rest, potentially in Europa League matches. However, Szoboszlai’s ability to play on the left flank will also provide more competition for Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.
